“A Song of Ascent – Towards the Beacon of Peace”
Dear Friends,
During our annual charge conference which took place last month, our District Superintendent invited us to reflect on possible “Front Porch” opportunities that Mt. Tam Church could offer to our surrounding area.
Front porch experiences are events or activities that a church offers to its neighbors in order to build relationships with the community. While we hope that those who attend these events will want to learn
more about our church and perhaps even make us their church home, the intent of a front porch opportunity is centered on community-building and relationship-building rather than on evangelism or conversion.
In light of that conversation with our DS, I am excited to let you know about our first Front Porch Experience which is a Service for the Longest Night on December 21st.
Here is a brief description of the service:
The Holiday season is often marked by expressions of joy, excitement, and happiness. However, this period of celebration can often overshadow the pain, hurt and loneliness that many experience during
this time of year.
As an act of care for our community, Mt. Tam Church will be hosting a Service for the Longest Night of the year. During this gathering, we will make space for and give voice to the elements of our lives and world which weigh heavy on our hearts. This service is open to people of all faith traditions and will feature music, candles, poetry, and readings from sacred texts.
All are welcome to join the service which begins at 6:30pm. It will last approximately 45 minutes and the sanctuary will remain open for silent mediation meditation for 30 minutes after the service concludes.
I am thankful to be a part of a church which strives to care not only for its members, but also for its neighbors and community as well.
In Peace and Hope,
Luke
