This winter my son Caleb asked us if he could join the 1st/2nd grade basketball league in Tiburon. My wife and I were very excited to support him in this effort but I have to admit that I got more than I bargained for because it turns out there was a shortage of volunteers to coach the teams. Before I knew it, I had been issued a whistle, a clipboard and was thrown to the wolves (or in this case The Golden Lizards which is the name the kids picked for our team).
While coaching 6 and 7 year old boys has at times challenged my patience, I have found the experience very fulfilling and am thankful for this opportunity.
This experience reminds me that we all get unexpected invitations every now and then. While it might be tempting to say “no” to these invitations, I have more often than not found that the most important moments in my life have happened because I was willing to take a chance and say “yes.”
This week in worship, we will be looking at an unexpected invitation Jesus extended to a couple of fisherman. It was an invitation that changed their lives and the world forever. I hope you can join us as our own Tricia Wiig offers a message that reminds us of the invitations God has for us today.
Take Care,
Luke
